309 Tig Wire

309L Stainless Steel TIG Wire is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel filler rod particularly suited to dissimilar-metal welding, including joining stainless steel to mild or carbon steel. With a higher chromium and nickel content than common 308L filler, 309L provides excellent weldability, good corrosion resistance and increased tolerance to dilution from the parent materials.

Commonly referred to as 309 TIG Wire, 309L TIG Wire, ER309L TIG Rod, 23 12 L TIG Wire or Stainless-to-Mild-Steel TIG Wire, it is an extremely useful filler to have in fabrication, maintenance and repair environments.

Ideal for stainless-to-mild-steel welding

One of the most important applications for ER309L TIG wire is joining austenitic stainless steels to carbon and mild steels.

When these different materials are joined, dilution from the carbon steel can significantly alter the composition of the weld deposit. The relatively high chromium and nickel content of 309L helps compensate for this dilution and maintain a suitable stainless weld-metal structure.

This makes 309L an excellent choice for dissimilar joints, transition welds and buffer layers between stainless and carbon steels. 

309L TIG welding wire is widely used for stainless-to-mild-steel joints, dissimilar-metal fabrication, stainless steel fabrication, pipework, petrochemical equipment, pressure and process equipment, cladding and buffer layers, structural fabrication, maintenance, repair and general engineering.

It is also used for welding similar 23% chromium / 12–13% nickel stainless steels.
