  • Material Type: E312 electrodes are designed for welding difficult-to-weld steels and dissimilar metals where cracking might otherwise occur.

  • Composition:

    • Around 29–32% Chromium and 8–10% Nickel.

    • Higher chromium and lower nickel compared to E309, which gives welds very high strength and resistance to cracking.

    • The weld deposit tends to solidify as a two-phase structure (austenite + ferrite), making it extremely tough and crack-resistant.

  • Applications:

    • Joining dissimilar steels (stainless to carbon steel, stainless to tool steel, high manganese steel, etc.).

    • Welding unknown or unidentified steels (a common "problem-solver" electrode).

    • Hard-facing applications, since the weld metal is very hard and wear-resistant.

    • Repairs on steels with poor weldability (spring steels, high-carbon steels, etc.).

  • Properties:

    • Weld deposit has very high tensile strength (often ~95,000–120,000 psi).

    • Excellent resistance to cracking, even under severe thermal or mechanical stress.

    • Hard but still maintains some ductility.

    • Very corrosion- and oxidation-resistant (though not as corrosion-specific as 309 or 316 in some environments).
